Nudisiri - Mudibidre - Day 2

Either you have to travel or you have to read books. That is what our people believe, the two ways of getting the knowledge. Both gives us an experience which leads our life some or the other way.
Travel makes us to understand our culture, our nature and people. I have told you about treks, temples, beaches, but what I am writing now is an unique experience of understanding our culture. There was beginning, colorful dances and climax

One fine day my friend Anil told me about Alva's "nudisiri", a program which is as big as sahitya sammelana. I had been following this for years. But I have never been to this cultural festival. It was for 3 days, from 14th  November, Friday to 16th November, Sunday. I don't wanted to take leave and went on Friday night. Anil reached one day in advance. He registered my name in the registration counter and he experienced some cultural programs which I missed. Accommodation and food will be arranged by organizers only. Next day when I reached there, I got down near Mudibidre circle. From there I took auto. Meter is attached to auto and you can believe the auto people here. I directly went to Alva's boys hostel where our accommodation was arranged and Anil had already got one room. We both freshened up and went to Alvas college where nudisiri was arranged with Alvas bus.

hostel room where we stayed

Top view from hostel

As we entered the Alvas campus, statues of Lord Ganesha, Yakshagana artists and many sculptures welcomed us. Before coming here I had collected a lot of information about Alvas college. Adu's wife sumi was working here. Her friend chandu was also working here in Alva's ladies hostel as warden. I was supposed to meet her next day.

Cafeteria also colorful

We both were hungry and rushed to one of the room where breakfast was serving. There were 3-4 places where food was arranged.  We decided to take one round of whole campus. First thing we saw is students practicing Malla kamba. See the below photo, Isn't is fascinating ?

Talk on Language and Education

Gururaj Karajgi is one of the most leading educationalist I have come across. His book "Karanalu baa Beleke" is quite popular among youth. His mention in the program list took us to place where all the 3 days experts talk was held.

dolu kunita

Drinking water facility was good

Welcome to expert talk

First Mohan Chandragutti was talking. There was a lot of good points he mentioned.

  • We always use ear phone but don't listen to those sounds of nature and that's the reason we don't understand the language of nature.
  • If we need to understand nature, we need to listen to nature. Those beautiful sounds, birds and animal sounds have different meaning. All the secrets of nature are hidden in that.

Then he started mentioning about different Kannada language we speak.
  •    There are different Kannada we can find. Coastal kannada, south Kannada, North Kannada. The Kannada the writers and poets speak is different.
  • Adikavi Pampa says Banavaasi kannada is real Kannada.
  • There are many writers who have mentioned about which is real Kannada. Nagasena of Dharmamruta and Kesiraja of Shabdamanidarpana has mentioned about the same.
  • Kumara Vyasa says what the common people speak that is the real Kannada.
  • Though these discussions on which Kannada is the real one seemed to be irrelevant. But as the discussion went on, I thought it is good to know the history.
Then the topic went to movies and the partiality towards south and north .

  • In movies they always make fun of Kannada spoken by North Karnataka people. They will force the Kannada spoken by them on us.
  • Then they mention about the movies portraying Kaveri as mother of Kartnataka. But Krishna river gives water to 8 districts of north Karnataka. Why they don't mention about that.
  • Movies are obviously the first love for writers when they want to criticize. The way movies portray women, that was also criticized.
  • You go to any scholar of local language, they don't like imposition of Sanskrit on them. There is a long debate on this. Kannada is nearly as old as Sanskrit. Even more research is going on this respect. For me Sushma Swaraj looked as stupid as Rahul Gandhi or Subramanyam Swami when she spoke about forcing Sanskrit on people. I being a Sanskrit student love the contribution of Sanskrit to literary world. Then it was optional and I chose the language. You can't force some language over the local language. Then I also don't like we being more conservative about the language, caste, religion and many rituals. There should be some boundary.

Then there was some jokes on modern foods. When some one mentioned Gobi Manchurian as Goobe Manchurian, there was laughter.

Siddalingayya was the chair person for the discussion. Mohan Alva, chair person of Alva's education society was also present.

Then came the most important talk by Gururaj Karajgi. His talk was more related to education and the way it has changed. There was no aggression but he made us to understand what he was telling.

Here are the important points he mentioned :

  • What should be the motto of education ? Education's main motto should be to teach love. I really liked the way he said.
  • Today if you see the list of terrorist, Bhatkal name is more found. Is the extremism is taught in their home ? If no where ? If education would have taught them to love, they would have not become terrorist.  I felt really bad, when Bhatkal's name is dragged into this topic. Because I belong to the Bhatkal though I am born in Sagar and brought up in Siddapur.
  • Then every parents would like their child to get admission in English medium. Even I would like to do the same, when I will be having one. The question is they will check the ratings and every thing. But do they check the schools teach them to love people around. Do they teach morals, culture and about nature.
  • My uncle and parents made me to join Siddavana Gurukula. Today I understand why they did so. Of course it was not perfect in every thing but it made me to understand how life will be? How to face life ? importance of relationship, friendship and many more. I would have been incomplete without that phase.
  •  He mentioned now a days we have CBSE, IESE, SB, Cambridge board and many boards. Then there were illegal schools started which were teaching in English medium. Why so ? It takes 2 years to get CBSE approval after the college starts functioning. They have no option but to start within state board and then getting approval. Then who is the culprit ? Is government not wrong in making such rules?. If government schools would have the restriction imposed like private schools, our education would have improved. Our seniors were far better when comes to the thinking aspects. And we are absolutely better than our juniors. We find our education system adds lot of things to the books. But do they make us to think ?  what is right and wrong ? positive attitude ? and then do they have tendency to cope with the pressure ? I find today's generation more intelligent but without the real education.
  • We check whether the schools have swimming pools and other facilities but we forgot to check how the children will be brought up other than the academic. If school drop outs are becoming the pillars of this society, then where our education has failed to recognize them. Then who taught them to make it to the top. A question we all need to ask our self.
  • Education rarely get the help and then interest for loan is more. Then they have to impose on us only. That is the reason education has become a business. Government if can't do any thing on this, nothing going to change.
  •  Now a days Government has told all schools to have CC TV camera. What is the use ? Can camera can control the bad deeds of human beings?. A moral less education leads to moral less people.
  • Then there is a proverb If you continue to call your son as an idiot, he will prove you right. So be careful while proving your son wrong but you should not forget injecting morality to your kid with your love.
  • He also mentioned about his teacher Huyulogol master who used to help his students financially and used to give confidence. Today have you seen any such teachers ?. Such teachers have become very rare. Reason education is business.
Vande mataram

Then Mohan Alwa told about his trust providing free education to the students in Kannada medium. When the talk ended, my brain was still thinking about the topics they discussed. Then there were many topics but we decided to move to some other program after Vande mataram dance.

After roaming here and there, we entered the exhibition of Yakshagana pictures. As we moved to each character, we were in some other world.  Just reminded me those days when we were forced to watch Yakshagana in Gurukul and now we know that was worth.

We moved to lunch which was the best part ;-).Lunch menu included Boilt rice, white rice, 1 chapati,2 palya, sambar, rasam, 1 sweet, butter milk, payasa, pickle.   After lunch we found some amazing dance known as Chande from the locals. Here is a link for the same.

Then we moved to some musical performance. Jugalbandi between flute, Tabla and saxophone.

After enjoying the jugalbandi we moved again to some malla kamba performance.

Balanced act from Alvas student

Some ramayana characters
Then we moved to some bharat natya performances. I met my Ujire friend, Adithya Bhat who is working as a doctor in Mudubidre. We had some snacks. Anil was very much in love with mudubidre because of beautiful girls. For some work, Adithya left and we were busy with some photo session.

Alvas campus looked more beautiful in the night. Water fountains and lighting made it more colorful.

We walked though some yakshagaana and tale maddale performance. Then we had dinner and moved the best program of nudisiri, cultural program by Alvas students. They have hired lot of experts for this performance. Here are some of them.

  • Baratanatya (Couldn't take the photo)

  • Rajasthan's folk dance - Banjara

  • Srilankan dance Pahathrata netum

  • Yakshagaana (picture not available)

  • Dollu kunita

  • Katak dance on Kalavati tarana

  • Maharashtrian Lavani dance

  • Orissa's folk dance Gotipua

  • West Bengal's Purulichua dance which is under extintion

  • Tenkana Yakshagaana - Bramari vilasa

  • Kerala's Chande dance

  • Punjab's bangda (pic not available)

The program went till 1:30 AM. We sat till the last dance completed.

Next day was the last day of Nudisiri. Anil and I wanted to visit Savira kamba Jain basidi. That will be covered in different post.

We have to respect our culture and have to adopt good things from other culture. That is how we can lead our culture
