KP : The paradise for trekkers

Sometimes I really think I will go to hell instead of heaven. Because I have made people walk in rain, made them to listen to my stupid jokes, poems and horrible attempt of singing (my horrible attempt of jab koi baat bigad jaye in mindtree), made them to believe in my pranks (even my friends have made me to believe in their pranks. Varun might know it better.)and most important is made them to climb mountains with me(of course I couldn't make some one fall in love with me because I was damn serious) . There are many people who want to slap me for that. Shiva comes on top of the list because I am the reason behind his trekking in bare foot. After that he never had the daring to come with me for trekking. These all happened during our trekking to Kumara parvata.

Trek route

Kumara parvata was one of the most memorable trek organised by me. Kumara parvata is the 3rd highest peak in  Karnataka. It belongs to Somawarpet taluk of Kodagu or Coorg. There are 2 entrance to the peak : one from beedahalli via heggademane temple and another from kukke subramanya via Giri gadde. There will be always debate on which route is the difficult route. But according to me from kukke subramanya it is quite difficult route and it is around 14 km trek route.  That is the reason why we chose this route.

Team

When you organize a trek, it is very difficult to please every one and even more difficult is to find the right team. I told about kumara parvata trek to my team members in Schneider. Every one said yes initially and then backed out for some reason. I was left with only Shiva from imagine team, Nitin from power-cet (both NeST employees), Abhimanyu Gujjar (we call him tree),Vineet who has the prior experience of going there(co-organizer).

All four were my friends, Vineet being my childhood friend, was obviously the person with whom I can depend upon always. Guru skipped this trek because of some reason. Abhi has been the wanderer travelling all around India. Nitin Terry was my best mallu friend in NeST who likes to enjoy and had no problem in adjusting to the other Kannadigas. Shiva is one of the innocent guy and I told him to come with a comfortable shoe. He is a very simple guy and borrowed a good shoe from his brother-in-law. But he forgot to test the comfortability of the shoe.

Trekking and preparation

We planned to leave early from Bengaluru on Friday 21st Feb 2014. But Abhi was having some project release. So we booked the 11 PM bus. When we reached kukke, it was around 6 AM. We took a small room for freshening up for 250 Rs.

We carried following stuffs with us

  1. Torch. (must)
  2. Chapati, chatnipudi, jam, javar roti for Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast.
  3. Fruits, biscuits and chocolates.
  4. Sleeping bag. I and Vineet had sleeping bag and we rented 3 sleeping bag for 50 Rs/day.
  5. Dry fruits brought by Vineet.
  6. Toilet kit, medical kit.
  7. 2 liter water/person.
  8. glucose.

I have strictly told them not to bring any food. I had asked them what to bring and brought the same. I told Vineet to bring only dry fruits. Still Shiva brought so many things and his bag was little bit heavier. For lunch Vineet had already called Bhatru mane. Bhatru mane comes in between the trek route where people will have food. Some people who don't want to camp outside, stay here.

We referred this blog and divided our journey milestones.

Temple to Bhatru mane :

I took bath early and had a breakfast in daba. I took parcel for others since they wanted to have breakfast inside forest. We began our trek around 9 AM.

Kukke Subramanya temple

We crossed Kukke temple and came to entrance of KP which is around 1 Km away from temple.

With team

With another gang who couldn't complete the trek

Once we entered the forest, Vineeth and Abhi had breakfast. We have to cross a small forest and after the forest it is easier route to bhatru mane. Forest was good point of this trek and we love to listen to that sound of forest.

Vineet and Abhi had breakfast
It was very hot in a sunny day and after we crossed the forest, we felt the tiredness. Shiva's shoe was little bit tighter and he was not able to walk. Then he removed the shoe and started walking in bare foot.

Inside forest

Crossed the forest
This route was around 5.5 - 6 km. By the time we reached bhatru mane it was around 12:30 PM.

Inside the bhatru mane.

Bhatru mane is surrounded by their farm land. We loved the hospitality of bhatru mane.  We had lunch. For lunch rice, sambar, butter milk, rasam, pickle was there. We took rest for some time there, filled the water bottles and continued our trek.

Yo yo
We reached forest office where Shiva kept his shoe with which he tried to walk from bhatru mane and took forest guard's slipper. It was horrible journey for Shiva. We all felt bad for that.

We paid the forest entree fee 50 Rs / person. We took breaks in between to see Shiva is making with us or not. In the end when we were about to reach Mantapa, we found a stream of water. We filled the bottles. Without going to mantapa, we moved forward. We wanted to reach peak by 6 PM. It was getting steeper.

Kallu mantapa to Shesha parvatha :

Mantapa was on our right hand side and we chose not to stay there and moved our legs with little bit force.

Quite difficult route.

Super fit Vineet was tired.

You can't miss this route

When we reached Shesha parvata we were tired. My task was to take every one to the peak. So I was moving with them. Shiva was almost about to fall :-).

Shesha Parvata to Kumara Parvata :

From here Vineet moved faster and disappeared :-). I and Abhi were searching for both Vineet who has gone faster and Nitin and Shiva who were moving slowly.

From here it was rock climbing :-)
We entered the forest. We didn't have the time to take photographs. Abhi told, we can sleep inside the forest as Shiva and Nitin will not make it to the peak.. But I was sure that they will make it. I told him we are almost there and we should not leave when the destination is very near. Finally we came near to the rocky hill and saw Vineet sitting on the top of the rock.  Here we found rocks were steeper and slippery. There was every chance of people getting injured after a wrong step. We slowly climbed that rocky portion and waited for Shiva and Nitin to come. Finally when we saw their movements, we heaved a sigh of relief. Finally when we made it to the peak, a little distance from rocky portion, we had a feeling of winning the whole world.  The Hero was definitely Shiva, first with bare foot and then with slipper. I would have not imagined any person climbing KP with such a situation. Hail Shiva.

Finally we made it.

It was very cold and we tried to have fire camp. But that didn't work We finally had dinner (chapati and chatni pudi) with small fame of fire and left for a dreamy world to leave all those pain behind. Sleeping bag was good enough to sustain the cold temperature outside.

sun set

Next day Morning :

Next day when we woke up it was 6 AM. There were many camps. I got to know some people have started in the night from kukke. We started clicking photos and roamed around to see the spectacular beauty of KP. Then we opened our chapati pack and had our breakfast with jam.

Chapati, chatnipudi, jam

We knew that climbing down was easier but we had to leave early to reach early. We decided to leave after breakfast.

With Karnataka flag

Jai Karnataka

Finally it was time to leave.

KP to Sheshaparvata

KP is first time for kid

beauty

Move slowly

It was almost 70 degree elevation
We : The team minus Shiva

We crossed the hard rocks and got into the forest. We saw some people bringing utensils and cooking inside the forest.

After this climb down, forest walk was easier

I think we should try this next time we visit here. Its an experience for life time, but we should come with a large group.

Easiest part is this forest walk

Shesha parvata view

Your heart not willing to leave this place.

Shesha parvata to Kallu mantapa :

Nitin with his usual style

Since it was 2nd half of February, there was less green compared to the monsoon days. It was very hot. We had plenty of water to sustain the heat.

I think it's his best photo till date :-P
Kallu mantapa

Kallu mantapa to Bhatru mane :

When  I and Vineet reached Kallu mantapa, we were still charged. We waited for others to come. We took some rest and moved faster.

Another group of trekkers who stayed in bhatru mane
We stopped again at water stream and then at view point. Before that Shiva paid 100 Rs to the forest guard for slipper and wore it for rest of the trek.
Again at view point
When we reached bhatru mane, it was perfect time for lunch. We took some rest inside the farm after lunch. We told Nitin, Shiva and Abhi to leave 30 minutes before so that they can walk slowly. We took a nap and left Bhatru mane at 3 PM.

Bhatru mane farm
Bhatru mane to exit:

We moved faster again and I accelerated my speed and stopped few distance from the exit. Vineet, Abhi, Nitin all crossed me. I came slowly with Shiva. When we reached the exit, we got a clap from another team. That was especially for Shiva. For 2 days we walked nearly 28 km and Shiva did it in both bare foot and slipper.

Wow!!! finally we did it.
Shiva was literally tired and wanted to stay there for that day. Next day he wanted to shave his head inside the temple(kesha mundana). So we decided to take a room to have bath, where Shiva can stay for another day. Shiva, Abhi went for Darshana after having bath. I and Vineet straight away went for dinner inside temple. Big queue was there and my mobile was in room. So I came back to room to check my sms to know the bus location and crew number. Later I got scolding from my mother for not taking Darshana. When we got into bus, it was a satisfaction we cannot describe in words.

KP was one of the best trek, although timing was not perfect. I must say sorry to Shiva for taking him to this trek :-P. He is the hero of this trek.
